Breaking news:Venables provides an update on Jayden Gibson and shares details about the spring injury report…….

Heading into the start of spring practices on Thursday, Oklahoma faces a lengthy injury list, with wide receiver Jayden Gibson being a major concern.

Gibson, who has been recovering from a season-ending knee injury last August, was expected to be a limited participant in spring practices in hopes of being ready for the fall. However, head coach Brent Venables revealed that Gibson suffered another setback during a workout on Tuesday.

“Jayden was running routes and may have had a minor setback,” Venables said. “We’ll get the final update soon. I don’t want to say anything further about it.”

The severity of Gibson’s injury is still uncertain, but it’s another difficult blow for a receiver the Sooners are counting on for the fall. Gibson, entering his senior season, missed all of last year and was among five key receivers who were sidelined for significant periods last season.

With key departures like Jalil Farooq, Andrel Anthony, and Nic Anderson, Oklahoma added four new wide receivers through the transfer portal. However, Gibson, with his experience and combination of size and athleticism, remains a crucial player for the team.

Venables also provided an update on linebacker Kendel Dolby, who missed nine games last season due to a foot injury.

“Kendel has looked good in a limited role as well,” Venables said. “Neither Gibson nor Dolby participated in mat drills. They’re just continuing with their rehab and recovery.”

Beyond Gibson and Dolby, Venables discussed other injuries as spring practices begin. Several players, including starting offensive linemen Heath Ozaeta and Logan Howland, defensive tackle Jayden Jackson, and tight end Kade McIntyre, will miss the spring due to labrum injuries. Wide receiver KJ Daniels will miss due to a hamstring injury, and Andy Bass will be sidelined with an ACL injury.

Running back Jovantae Barnes, who missed time last season, will be out with a foot injury. Seth Freeman (knee) and Afalava (knee) will also be absent from spring practices.

Venables added that safety Peyton Bowen, dealing with turf toe, will be a limited participant, while cornerback Gentry Williams, who missed most of last season due to a shoulder injury, will take part in non-contact individual drills this spring.

In total, nine players are expected to miss significant portions or all of spring practices.
