The Minnesota Vikings are actively looking for a quarterback after parting ways with three signal-callers as the new NFL year began. With Sam Darnold, Daniel Jones, and Nick Mullens joining the Seattle Seahawks, Indianapolis Colts, and Jacksonville Jaguars, respectively, J.J. McCarthy has emerged as the top contender to start in Week 1. However, after missing his rookie season due to injury, the 22-year-old needs a solid veteran backup. Currently, Brett Rypien is the only other quarterback on the roster.
There are still several free-agent quarterbacks available, and according to Darren Wolfson of KSTP, Marcus Mariota is a player that has long been admired by some in the Vikings organization.
### Marcus Mariota’s Career and Potential Fit with the Vikings
Marcus Mariota, the second overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, spent his first four and a half seasons as the Tennessee Titans’ starting quarterback. In the last five years, he has primarily been a backup for the Las Vegas Raiders, Philadelphia Eagles, and Washington Commanders, while also starting 13 games for the Atlanta Falcons in 2022.
Over his career, Mariota has started 74 games, accumulating over 16,000 passing yards, 97 touchdowns, and 55 interceptions. Last season, while with Washington, he played in three games, throwing for 364 yards, four touchdowns, and no interceptions, completing 77.3% of his passes (34-of-44).
At 31 years old, Mariota has earned roughly $75.5 million throughout his career, with Spotrac estimating his market value at around $4.2 million for a one-year contract.
### Why Marcus Mariota Makes Sense for Minnesota
While Mariota may not be a game-changer, he fits the profile of what the Vikings need behind J.J. McCarthy. As an experienced veteran, Mariota can offer valuable guidance to McCarthy while also being capable of stepping in if necessary. At the same time, he’s not a dominant player who would challenge McCarthy’s starting role if the young quarterback faces struggles.
Head coach Kevin O’Connell proved last season that he can keep the team competitive with quarterbacks like Nick Mullens and Josh Dobbs. Mariota could fill a similar role, helping the Vikings stay competitive if needed.
From a financial perspective, Mariota’s projected $4 million salary makes him an affordable option for Minnesota. This allows the team to maintain flexibility while keeping McCarthy on a rookie contract through at least 2027, with a potential team option for 2028. With the Vikings investing heavily in their offensive and defensive lines, saving money at the quarterback position would give them the resources to address anticipated departures in the secondary this offseason.
