Lakers’ coaching staff: two legends join as Lakers top assistants
Los Angeles – The Los Angeles Lakers have had a busy week. On Wednesday, shortly after it was announced that LeBron James would return for a second season, a new story surfaced about the coaching staff that will support JJ Redick.
Nate McMillan and Scott Brooks will join the Purple and Gold as the team’s head assistant coaches, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. They have 1,189 victories in total.
The most recent team McMillan coached was the Atlanta Hawks with Trae Young. In February 2023, he was let go. In addition, he led the Indiana Pacers, Portland Trail Blazers, and Seattle Supersonics as head coach.
The last position Brooks held in Portland was assistant coach for Chauncy Billups. In addition, he was head coach of the Washington Wizards and Oklahoma City.
The Lakers fired their entire coaching staff shortly after they were eliminated from the playoffs in the first round, along with Darvin Ham.
Redick was brought in last month and had no prior coaching experience.

Before Klay Thompson joined the Dallas Mavericks, the Los Angeles Lakers made a serious attempt to sign him. One story provided an explanation for the seasoned shooter’s decision to decline a chance to partner with LeBron James.
Thompson and the Mavericks reached a three-year, $50 million deal on Monday as part of a sign-and-trade. In order to help the Lakers offer Thompson somewhere in the neighborhood of $80 million over four years, LeBron James was reportedly willing to accept a lower salary on his new contract, according to a story published on Wednesday by ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne and Kendra Andrews. LeBron and Thompson also had “many in-depth discussions,” but in the end, the four-time NBA champion concluded that it would be too comparable to play in Golden State if he joined the Lakers.
Thompson questioned whether he would be exchanging one fishbowl for another, an insider told ESPN.
Thompson also feels the Mavericks are closer to earning a championship than the Lakers because they had recently advanced to the NBA Finals. This is one of the reasons he chose them. After his connection with the Warriors ended, he felt he had a much greater chance of starting over in Dallas than in Los Angeles.
Mychal Thompson, the father of Thompson, was a member of the Lakers’ renowned Showtime period for more than four seasons. Mychal is currently the team’s radio color analyst after winning consecutive championships with the Los Angeles Rams in 1988 and 1989. Even dad made an effort in public to persuade his son to sign with the Lakers, but Klay was unconvinced by LeBron’s or his own father’s sales presentation.
