The Los Angeles Lakers were rumored to be signing former New Orleans Pelicans center Jonas Valanciunas to partner with LeBron James and Anthony Davis a few days before NBA free agency opened. The Washington Wizards have thwarted the Lakers’ ambitions just hours into free agency.

The Wizards and Valanciunas have reached an agreement on a three-year, $30 million contract, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. Valanciunas, a 32-year-old former fifth overall pick, has been the starting center for the Pelicans for the last three seasons. He had previously played for the Toronto Raptors for seven seasons and the Memphis Grizzlies for three.

Now, though, Valanciunas is about to sign a contract with his fourth NBA franchise, the Wizards, who are a youthful, rebuilding squad looking for a new identity under head coach Brian Keefe. He will start at center. At 6-foot-11 and 265 pounds, Valanciunas adds even more size to Washington’s frontcourt, where he will be paired with 7-foot-216-pound Frenchman Alex Sarr, who was selected in the first round of the draft.

The Wizards’ frontcourt looks to be set for the next three years, even though they may still be working to find the ideal lineup in their backcourt. Right now, all that has to be done is locate more impact players who can ignite this rebuild and develop their young players. However, Valanciunas’s signing a fair contract is a welcome bonus.
