On Monday, World Rugby announced that English referee Luke Pearce will take his place.

No additional explanation was provided, however in order to accommodate the adjustment, all referees for the international July window had to be moved.

In 2011, Angus Gardner officiated his first Test match between Vanuatu and Papua New Guinea.

He refereed in three Rugby World Cups: in 2015, 2019 and 2023. In 2018, he was voted World Rugby Referee of the Year.

“Angus Gardner (Australia) has withdrawn from officiating responsibilities for the two-Test series against South Africa and Ireland for personal reasons, according to confirmation from World Rugby. Luke Pearce (England) will take the Australian’s place as the first test’s referee and second test’s assistant referee, according to a statement.

“Furthermore, there are additional changes to the appointments as a result of the change, with Christophe Ridley (England) taking Pearce’s place as assistant referee for Japan vs Georgia on July 13.”
