Arsenal hand Wrexham big Arthur Okonkwo transfer boost

The three-year permanent signing of goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo by WREXHAM has been finalized.

After having a great season-long stint at The Racecourse from Arsenal in 2023–2024, Okonkwo has agreed to a deal that would last till the end of the 2026–2027 season.

On transfer deadline day in September, the 22-year-old initially joined the Reds on loan from the Premier League’s biggest teams. He made 40 appearances across all competitions and maintained 16 clean sheets last season, helping Wrexham finish runners-up in League Two and earn back-to-back promotions for the first time in the team’s history.

Okonkwo received special recognition when he and Reds teammate Elliot Lee were named to the League Two Team of the Season.

After being released by Arsenal, Okonkwo became a free agent, and he signed with Phil Parkinson as his first summer acquisition.

For Wrexham’s first League One season since 2004–05, Parkinson is trying to bolster his team, and Okonkwo, who drew interest from other teams, is excited to be joining.

“I’m feeling very good, I’m so happy to have finally signed, and I can’t wait to get back to it,” he said after signing with the official club website.

The previous season was fantastic. I’m back because I had a lot of great times with the fans, and I’m returning because I know they wanted me back. It feels fantastic to be here at last.

“Ever since I moved here last season, I’ve felt like this is home. The management, coaches, players, and the co-chairmen are all excellent, as is the backroom crew that you are not able to see. It feels wonderful to be here.

The arrival of Okonkwo, who spent the 2022–23 season on loan at Crewe Alexandra and Sturm Graz, was deemed crucial by Parkinson.

The manager of the Reds continued, “We’re thrilled with the deal. It’s very significant to us.

“Arthur was fantastic for us the previous season, and we’ve been working incredibly hard to get him signed ever since the season ended.

“We’ve always said it’s important to have perseverance to try and get your number one target, and Arthur certainly was that. It’s great credit to all the work that has gone on behind the scenes.”

“For us, it’s a fantastic first summer signing.
