Red Wings' Trey Augustine just keeps proving he's 'special' with USA, MSU - The Athletic

Trey Augustine, a prospect with the Detroit Red Wings, is already a member of an elite group. Winners of an IIHF world junior title are rare in hockey.

He’s now trying to get into a fraternity that’s even more exclusive. The goal for the netminder is to win the world junior championship twice in a row.

The World Junior Summer Showcase preliminary roster for USA Hockey was released, and unsurprisingly, goalkeeper Augustine of the Michigan State Spartans is one of them.

Augustine, who was selected by Detroit with the 41st overall pick in the 2023 NHL entry draft, is one of ten players that competed for the gold medal with the 2024 U.S. National Junior Team and are returning for more. His trophy cabinet is already brimming with accolades from throughout the world.

Augustine took home a bronze medal from the 2023 World Juniors. He previously won gold (2023) and silver (2022) medals at the World Under-18 Championship while competing for the United States. He participated in the 2024 Senior World Tournament for the USA. Since 1930, Augustine is the only other adolescent to start a game in goal at the tournament. He is also the youngest American goalie ever.

According to John Vanbiesbrouck, assistant executive director of hockey operations at USA Hockey, “we knew coming in that (Augustine) was extremely poised.” “He’s probably older than his years, and that puts him at the top of his age group.”

Augustine, one of just two Michiganders from South Lyon, is one of the 46 athletes who received invitations to the summer camp. Brighton’s Lukas Fischer is the other. Fischer is the son of former Red Wings defenseman Jiri Fischer, who currently plays defense for the OHL’s Sarnia Sting. The older Fischer is an associate director of player personnel in Detroit at the moment.

Zeev Buium, a defenceman for the University of Denver, is another player for the USA. He is Shai Buium’s younger brother, the defense prospect with the Red Wings. At Denver, the siblings shared a championship last season in the NCAA.

Zeev Buium and Lukas Fischer are both eligible to be selected in the 2024 NHL entry draft.

The World Junior Summer Showcase will take place at USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth, Michigan from July 26 to August 3.
