The Lakers have appointed former Detroit Pistons top man as new Coach.

Pistons will 'strongly consider' James Borrego as Monty Williams replacement

It’s possible that the Detroit Pistons unintentionally gave the Los Angeles Lakers a lifeline.

They were essentially forced to stick with JJ Redick as their coach because James Borrego was a serious contender to lead the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Pistons respectively.

Despite his great basketball knowledge and respectability, Redick lacks coaching expertise.

The Lakers may and should call Monty Williams to arrange a meeting because he is now available.

That’s how Udonis Haslem feels, anyway.

The Miami Heat icon said that the Lakers should investigate Williams further during an appearance on ESPN’s Get Up.

Although there is no denying that Redick may have a great career in the league, he may not have influence over the locker room. He feels that it is their responsibility to select the finest coach.

That ought not to be a problem for a seasoned coach like Williams.

However, Haslem questioned Williams’ desire to return to the NBA as a coach, or at least not so soon after being let go.

Williams’ contract was terminated by the Pistons after just one season, but they are still obligated to pay him $65 million.

Redick is allegedly close to signing with the Lakers, who hope to have their new coach in place before the NBA Draft the following week.

However, given this unexpected turn of events, Rob Pelinka and Jeanie Buss may want to wait a bit before deciding.
