In a Men’s College World Series elimination game on Tuesday in Omaha, Nebraska, No. 8 seed Florida State defeated No. 4 North Carolina 9–5, highlighted by back-to-back home runs in the ninth inning by Jaxson West and Max Williams. Florida State has advanced to play Tennessee again, the top-seeded team, starting on Wednesday. To get to the MCWS finals, the Seminoles need to defeat the Volunteers twice. Tennesse won their first-round match 12–11 over Florida State.
After eliminating Virginia on Sunday, the Seminoles (49-16) defeated another Atlantic Coast Conference team thanks to two-run drives from Williams, West, and Daniel Cantu. A four-run fifth inning included RBI singles by Cantu, Alex Lodise, West, and Williams put Florida State ahead 7-1. In response, the Tar Heels (48-16) scored four runs in their own fifth inning thanks to RBI hits from Jackson Van De Brake and a three-run home slam from Vance Honeycutt to left. The Seminoles’ insurance home runs from West and Williams followed.
In his final 4 1/3 innings, Florida State’s Connor Hults (3-1) allowed just two hits, one walk, and no runs while striking out two batters for North Carolina. Aidan Haugh (4-3) of North Carolina took the loss in 2 and a half innings after giving up three runs on two singles and three walks. He got three strikeouts.
