The NBA legend Jerry West is starting to receive tributes. The NBA logo silhouette was inspired by the 86-year-old West, whose peaceful passing was announced on Wednesday by Shams Charania of The Athletic.
“With his wife by his side, Jerry West departed peacefully this morning. An iconic figure, the logo, a basketball great. It’s a tremendous tragedy to consider the deaths of Bill Russell and Bill Walton in the previous year or two.
ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith stated that, in his post-mortem remarks regarding the Lakers icon, West had informed him that he thought Michael Jordan “deserved” to take his place as the NBA emblem.
“In the first, we had a discussion…He overheard me stating that Michael Jordan should replace him in the NBA logo’s silhouette.
“He didn’t call to dispute it. He thought I would dispute what I had said, so that’s why he called. And he responded, “Definitely not.” Michael Jordan is the best, in my opinion. I believe he is deserving.
Following West’s demise, the NBA community, including Jordan, paid respect to him.
“As I got to know him more, I realized that while I always wanted to compete against him, I really would have preferred to be his colleague. He will always be missed. Peace be with you, Logo.
