The New York Yankees are reportedly considering the recruitment of a starting pitcher who has stormed the league in 2024, despite having a strong pitching staff that will only get stronger with Gerrit Cole’s comeback.

As we head into today’s MLB games, the Yankees are playing like a whole new team. With a strong 3.5-game lead in the American League East and the best record in all of baseball (50-22), they have won 13 of their last 16 games. The most concerning aspect of their stellar season debut is that they managed it without the services of 2023 AL Cy Young winner and ace Gerrit Cole.

But his absence hasn’t really mattered because the starting lineup, which is captained by rookie Luis Gil, has been utterly overpowering. When Cole plays again in the upcoming weeks, they will have some difficult choices to make. Nevertheless, after a strong season this year, the team is genuinely considering acquiring another starting pitcher.

“The Yankees are believed to like White Sox reliever-turned-starter Garrett Crochet,” according to New York Post MLB source Jon Heyman this week.

Statistics for Garrett Crochet in 2024: 6–5, 3.15 ERA, 0.895 ERA, 116 SO, 19 BB, and 82.2 IP

The 24-year-old, who the White Sox selected with the 11th overall choice in 2020, has been one of the few shining lights on an otherwise terrible club this season. He has amassed a league-high 116 strikeouts in 15 starts, and his rate of 12.6 strikeouts per nine innings is the highest in the MLB. Another reason the Sox would be seeking a high price for Crochet is because of his great start.

The team is also concerned about Gil, although he has already tossed 21 1/3 more innings than he has ever pitched. However, given his background in the major leagues as a reliever, Crochet’s late-season move to New York’s bullpen seems like a sensible choice for the gifted lefty.
