Despite their unpredictable start to the WNBA season, the Chicago Sky have a very talented squad. Angel Reese, a former standout player for LSU women’s basketball, is one newcomer in Chicago with great promise. When it comes to the 2024 WNBA Rookie of the Year Award, Reese and Caitlin Clark are early favorites. Teresa Weatherspoon, the head coach, also offered a compelling perspective on Reese’s Olympic prospects with Team USA.
Reese has what it takes, Weatherspoon told reporters with pride, to make an Olympic squad in the future.
She’s displaying it. She is capable. After Chicago’s practice on Tuesday, a grinning Weatherspoon remarked, “You’re doggone right, she has what it takes,” according to GN Sports TV.
Angel Reese has highly regarded Weatherspoon’s assertion. Since joining the Sky in the WNBA, she has produced a lot. The 6’3′′ rookie forward has averaged 11.6 points, 9.6 rebounds, and 1.9 steals per game through 10 games. In the last three games against Chicago, she has recorded a double-double. She also has the most offensive rebounds in the league.
With her outstanding effort against the Atlanta Dream on June 9, Reese joined Tamika Catchings and Candace Parker as the only players in WNBA history with 13 or more points, 13 or more rebounds, and 5 or more steals. Her internal presence gives Chicago a much-needed lift. Her offensive style still needs improvement.
Reese nearly always gets her scores in the paint and only shoots 34.6 percent from the field. She is, nevertheless, attempting to up her game. She demonstrated her range on Monday at Chicago’s practice with a long jumper:
Reese need to perceive a chance with upcoming Team USA rosters with further time and improvement. She is not alone, of course, in her quest for a berth on the elite team.
Caitlin Clark’s time as a member of the Iowa women’s basketball team was amazing. Most notably, in her senior year, she broke the all-time NCAA scoring records held by Pete Maravich and Kelsey Plum. In the 2023 NCAA championship game, Clark and Angel Reese engaged in a legendary fight. When the Indiana Fever selected the gifted guard with the first overall 2024 draft pick, she brought her skills to the WNBA.
When it was revealed that Clark had not been selected for the 2024 Team USA Paris Olympics roster, the internet flew into a frenzy. Colin Cowherd, a sports pundit, described the action as a “wasted opportunity.” He maintained that the other women on the roster will benefit from greater visibility and opportunity as a result of Clark’s inclusion.
But Clark’s exclusion from the 2024 roster will only help her develop more. Lead Women’s Sports Editor at ClutchPoints, Erin Achenbach, called Clark’s absence a “blessing in disguise.” During the Olympic break, the star guard will have an opportunity to recuperate and continue acclimating to the Fever. Angel Reese desires to keep expanding with the Sky, just like Clark does.
Maybe in the future, the two erstwhile adversaries in college will be on the same Olympic team. They will continue to put in all effort to support their teams’ success for the time being.
On June 12, Reese and Chicago play the Connecticut Sun and Alyssa Thomas in a crucial rematch to round out the season.
