Superstar collegiate basketball player Dlton Knechta of Tennessee arrived in Knoxville via the transfer channel, having previously made waves in Northern Colorado. Before losing to Purdue, he took over the SEC and guided the Vols to the Elite Eight.

Following Sunday night’s lottery, the order for the 2024 NBA Draft was determined. The Detroit Pistons, the poorest NBA franchise, were relegated to the fifth overall pick for the second consecutive year when the Atlanta Hawks won the lottery and received the first overall pick in the draft.

Now that we are aware of each team’s draft spot, where might Knecht be selected? He is expected to be selected in the lottery, and all the recent mock drafts leading up to the draft lottery point to him being selected in the top ten.

Since we now know the draft order for this year’s draft, the NBA has issued its official mock draft. Knecht had been anticipated to be selected somewhere between the seventh and eighth pick in previous mock drafts. Knecht is projected to be selected with the 10th overall pick in this year’s NBA Draft by NBA.com writer Ben Couch.

Knecht has consistently been selected by the Utah Jazz at No. 10 in NBA.com draft projections, according to Couch. “Capitalized on a transfer to Tennessee, putting up 25-plus points while scoring all kinds of ways, but especially from deep,” Couch said. “The seasoned transition could be smoother than most.”

Knecht is ranked No. 10 by Bleacher Report for the Jazz, dropping him two spots from their mock draft of April 22. They contrast Knecht with Wally Szczerbiak, an NBA player for four different teams for ten seasons (1999–2009).

Szczerbiak was a player with the Seattle Supersonics, Boston Celtics, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Minnesota Timberwolves. During his career, he shot 40.6% from three-point range and 48.5% from the field, averaging 14.1 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 2.4 assists.

Knecht moved up a couple slots from NBA.com and Bleacher Report to The Athletic. Knecht, according to Sam Vecenie, is going to the Portland Trailblazers at No. 7 overall. Knecht fits in here with the other draft mocks prior to the Draft Lottery.

“Knecht scored at a dizzying pace, averaging 25.5 points in 18 SEC games while shooting 48.4 percent from the field and 42.4 percent from 3,” writes Vecenie. “He finished the season averaging 21.7 points per game on 46% from the field, although his numbers were hurt by a stretch of play where he was not at full strength due to an ankle injury against North Carolina.

Although excellent college players don’t usually make excellent NBA players, Knecht is a lock to be selected in the lottery due to his style of play. His entire offensive repertoire ought to be applicable in an NBA scenario. He’s not just a fantastic shooter who excels in spot-up and off-ball situations, but he’s also a better athlete than most floor spacers. He can complete inside with hang time and sky during transition. He just has a natural ability to score.

Here, the draft becomes a little crazy. None of the other elite prospects that are included in the 7–10 bracket in the NBA document describing medical information access seem like a great fit for the Blazers, in my opinion. In the long run, Knecht can score points at a high level alongside Shaedon Sharpe and Scoot Henderson, which would be quite beneficial.”

According to ESPN, Knecht will lose to the San Antonio Spurs at No. 8. ESPN placed Knecht at No. 8 before to the draft lottery, but he was heading to the Memphis Grizzlies. According to ESPN’s Jonathan Givony, Knecht will join the Spurs following the draft lottery and will assist the team go one step closer to winning another NBA Championship with his offensive style.

“After addressing their point guard situation with the No. 4 pick, it might make sense for the Spurs to look at adding shooting to their roster to give Victor Wembanyama ample spacing to maximize his offensive gifts,” writes Givony. “With Wembanyama poised to emerge as an MVP contender shortly, the Spurs undoubtedly want to be competitive as soon as possible. Therefore, selecting Knecht, a 23-year-old plug-and-play scorer, seems like a good choice. His defensive flaws can be somewhat offset by having Wembanyama, the potential defensive player of the year, behind him.”

Seven is probably the highest Knecht could go in this year’s selection now that the order of the draft has been established. Knecht is even better off with seven, in my opinion, but anything can happen on draft night.
