Penguins' Guentzel wants to stay in Pittsburgh: 'I love this place so much' | theScore.com

Due to their inability to come to an agreement, the Carolina Hurricanes are shopping Jake Guentzel’s rights in trade ahead of free agency.

Jake Guentzel’s rights are allegedly being shopped by the Carolina Hurricanes. The team would prefer to re-sign him, but there is a sense that the forward plans to test the free agent market. Should that be the case, Carolina would like to partially recover its trade deadline acquisition costs. Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet says that the Hurricanes are reportedly seeking for as high as a second-round pick.

Guentzel can play either wing and is a proven, reliable scorer. With 30 goals and 47 assists in 67 games, he finished the season with 77 points. He scored four goals and collected nine points in 11 games for Carolina throughout the playoffs. He has averaged a point per game over the past three seasons, displaying his strong shooting, deft handling, and superb hockey sense.

It sounds like Guentzel will test the market and might go to the highest bidder because it seems the Hurricanes and him were unable to come to a new arrangement.

Who Will Be Most Enthusiastic About Guentzel?
Although the San Jose Sharks and Chicago Blackhawks have been mentioned as potential suitors, other teams may also show interest in signing the most sought-after free agent forward available.

A team that trades for him first gets to offer an eight-year contract extension instead of a seven-year one, which lowers the cap hit slightly over the course of the agreement.

According to Ben Pope, Kyle Davidson, general manager of the Blackhawks, was questioned about possible interest in Guentzel. “You talk about and you think about everything,” was his reply. All that needs to happen is that they must make sense overall. If not, you go on past them. Even then, they most likely won’t occur. If they do, you take them into consideration.
