Luis Gil's comeback to 2024 Yankees pitching X-factor

Today is Luis Gil’s 26th birthday, and this morning he received two prizes for his work during the previous month. Due to his outstanding play in May, the rookie pitcher for the New York Yankees was selected both AL Rookie of the Month and AL Pitcher of the Month. As one of the finest pitchers in baseball this season, Gil has emerged significantly for the Yankees, who currently own the best record in the league with a 42-19 record.

Gil’s spot in the Yankees rotation wasn’t even assured prior to the season. Because of Tommy John surgery, the youngster had not pitched in a professional baseball game since 2022. But Gil was named the team’s fifth starter following Gerrit Cole’s injury during Spring Training, and he has since emerged as one of the Yankees’ best arms.

With a 0.70 ERA, a perfect 6-0 record in six starts, and 44 strikeouts in 38.2 innings pitched, Gil was outstanding in May. With an amazing 31.2% K%, Gil limited opponents to a pitiful.109 AVG,.178 SLG%, and.172 xWOBA. His effort on May 18th against the Chicago White Sox, which set a new Yankees single-game rookie record with 14 strikeouts, was the highlight of his month. Orlando “El Duque” Hernández had previously held the record.

With his play this season, the rookie, 26, has elevated himself into the running to start the All-Star Game in July. Gil has a 7-1 record this season, a 1.99 ERA, and 79 strikeouts in 63.1 innings pitched. Gil is ranked first in the AL in hitting average against (.135), third in ERA, sixth in strikeouts, and second in wins.

Along with Gil, Aaron Judge, the OF for the Yankees, won AL Player of the Month for May following a tremendous month at bat. Since Yuli Gurriel and Gerrit Cole of the Houston Astros earned Player and Pitcher of the Month in the same month in 2019, this is the first time that two teammates have done so.

When Gil enters the field on Tuesday against the Minnesota Twins, he hopes to carry on his success into June. Gil was outstanding in his most recent start on May 29th against the Los Angeles Angels, going on to pitch 8.0 innings, give up two hits, one earned run, and strike out nine batters.
