Browns: Look inside OTAs on Tuesday as Deshaun Watson throws

This past January, the Cleveland Browns entered the postseason tournament with maybe the strongest overall defense in the NFL. However, they were humiliated 45-14 by the Houston Texans in a wild-card playoff game.

Jim Schwartz, the defensive coordinator for the Browns, discussed how to move past that setback with reporters on Thursday.

Despite starting quarterback Deshaun Watson missing more than half of the season due to a shoulder injury, the 2023 Browns concluded the regular season with an 11-6 record. Cleveland started the postseason atop the NFL rankings in both passing defense (164.7 yards given up per game) and total defense (average of 270.2 yards allowed per game), according to statistics from ESPN. In February, pass-rusher Myles Garrett was crowned the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year, while Schwartz was recognized as the league’s 2023 Assistant Coach of the Year.

However, as Bastock points out, in the first half of Cleveland’s postseason loss, rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud passed for 236 yards and three touchdowns. In an increasingly ridiculous play, Houston amassed 356 yards of total offensive yardage.

On September 8, the Browns will host quarterback Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys to kick off the 2024 season, giving Schwartz and crew the chance to demonstrate what they have learned.
