Alan Hutton claims that because Unai Emery signed a new deal at Villa Park, the manager of Aston Villa will have a “bigger say” when it comes to transfers.
The Spaniard signed a new five-year contract with the Villans on Monday, May 28, after leading his team to a fourth-place finish in the Premier League and the semifinals of the Europa Conference League the previous season.
Along with the contract extension, Emery’s title has also changed from head coach to manager as he, Monchi, and Villa’s recruitment team get ready to bolster their club in anticipation of their Champions League comeback the following season.
Hutton acknowledges his happiness at seeing the 52-year-old sign a new contract so quickly after the season ends and expresses confidence in Emery’s ability to advance Villa during this summer’s transfer window.
Hutton told Villa News, “I think that’s exactly what it means, that he has a larger say.”

“He took over as head coach, and in his several months at the club, he has demonstrated his coaching abilities.” He advanced them to the next level, finishing seventh before moving on to the top four, and it’s likely that he now wants more control over who enters.
“He is aware of his playing style and what suits him. His rapport with Monchi is strong, and I believe that he works really well with her, which will only help them progress.
“I believe that teams were moving away from having managers for a while. These are the players you have, coach. We’ll bring in a sporting director. It was just you. Together, let’s make it happen.
“They would replace the head coach if it didn’t work out, but I believe that appointing him as manager demonstrates their faith in him and their expectations for the coming years.”
Will Villa Park see any activity from Unai Emery and Aston Villa during the summer transfer window?
As Hutton notes, Emery and Monchi have collaborated tremendously well on recruitment in recent years, and it is quite uncommon that the two make a mistake in a move, especially when it comes to new hires.
Although some players, such as Nicolo Zaniolo and Clement Lenglet, may not have performed to the fullest extent anticipated of them while on loan, Pau Torres, Youri Tielemans, and Moussa Diaby have all joined and enhanced Villa this year.
In the long term, the Villans will only benefit by giving Emery a little more authority over hiring. It makes natural that he would strive to discover the kind of players his team needs because he is aware of what they are looking for.

With any luck, Villa can enjoy another productive summer this year and start the Premier League season strong the next year.
